Build Options – Spray Decks, Self Bailer, Cargo Fly, Rowing Frames

Build Options – Spray Decks, Self Bailer, Cargo Fly Internal Storage, and Rowing Frames.

Build up your Alpacka Raft exactly the way you want it! Most of our packrafts are available with either a Cruiser Spray Deck to shield out rain and splashes, a Whitewater Spray Deck for the warmest and driest boat on the market, or a Self Bailing Floor System for warmer climates and quick entry and exit. The Alpacka Gnu is available with a two person removable C2 style spray deck. The Fjord Explorer is also available with an optional rowing frame. Finally, optimize your gear storage with our innovative Cargo Fly internal gear storage system. Unfortunately, these build configurations are not available on the Scout, CuriYak, Ghost Scout, and Double Duck packrafts. Use the chart below to determine compatibility and scroll down to select options to order or to read more.  Please use our retrofit/repair page if you need to retrofit a spray deck or Cargo Fly to an existing boat.

Spray Decks:

Cruiser Spray Deck – Versatility

The Cruiser Spray Deck is our most versatile configuration. It’s drier and warmer than an open boat in the wind, rain, and whitewater. But you can remove most of the deck for warm or flatwater days or anytime you want to bring along your dog or fishing rods. The Cruiser is closed with a Velcro flap, which easily comes apart in the event of a wet exit, and uses an inflatable pillow to shed water. The Cruiser is a “semi-dry” deck and will take on some water in larger waves and whitewater.

Whitewater Spray Deck – Dry and Warm: The Whitewater Spray deck is our driest and warmest configuration, best for cold climates, whitewater, and long days in rough conditions. We use nano-lite aluminum and PEX poles to create a rigid, kayak style cockpit coaming, which is fitted with an ultralight spray skirt that is worn underneath your PFD like a traditional spray skirt. This whitewater spray deck will take your raft to a new level of performance, dryness, and warmth in challenging waters and adverse conditions.

Alpacka Gnu Spray Deck: The Alpacka Gnu is available with an optional two person removable whitewater spray deck. The whitewater spray deck is our driest and warmest configuration, best for cold climates, whitewater, and long days in rough conditions. We use PEX poles to create a rigid, kayak style cockpit coaming for each person, which are fitted with an ultralight spray skirt that is worn underneath your PFD like a traditional spray skirt.  The deck is attached to the boat with a zipper, so it can be completely removed for maximum versatility This whitewater spray deck will take your Gnu to a new level of performance, dryness, and warmth in challenging waters and adverse conditions.

Self Bailing Floor – Easy Entry and Exit, Whitewater Handling, Warm Climates:
New for 2016, our original Alpacka Raft series (the Alpaca, Yak, Llama, Mule) are available with a self-bailing floor instead of a spray deck. Our unique self bailing system is designed to optimize the balance between lightweight and durability that is essential to a high performance packraft, and features:

  • A durable lightweight nylon sleeve attached to the floor beginning just behind the foot area, which protects the inflatable self-bailing floor insert from wear and tear.
  • A tapered inflatable pillow inserted into the sleeve and inflated to lock in place.
  • A smaller inflatable pillow attached to the foot area, allowing your heels to sit below your butt for optimal paddling position and comfort. This is also the highest wear area in the boat. By separating the foot pillow from the main inflatable floor, the self bailing feature will remain intact if the foot pillow is damaged from wear and tear, and repair/replacement costs are minimized.
  • Drain holes are placed along either side of the inflatable floor.
  • Backband and 4-point thigh strap ready – Alpacka backband and thigh strap kits will be available in June of 2016.

Benefits of the self bailer are improved handling crossing eddylines and surfing holes, quicker entry and exit for scouting and portaging, and keeping cool in warm climates. However, the self-bailer has a slightly deeper draft and is the wettest and most exposed configuration. Keep this in mind in if you plan to use the boat in cold climates, especially long days on shallow arctic rivers. The self bailer offers better performance than the Whitewater Spray Deck when the boat is unloaded (i.e. day trips or lightweight overnights) due to the extra ballast of the water in the floor system, but the Whitewater Spray Deck offers better performance when the boat is fully loaded for a longer backcountry trip.

Cargo Fly Internal Gear Storage System:

The Cargo Fly is the ultimate packraft gear storage solution. The three piece system utilizes an airtight and watertight zipper installed in the stern of the boat together with two inflatable zippered dry bags which are clipped in place along the inside of the raft tubes. The system provides dry and secure gear storage, improved paddling performance due to a lower center of gravity, quicker transitions from packrafting to hiking, and the internal dry bags act as additional balanced air chambers for increased safety (even over a traditional multi-chamber boat) in the event of a puncture. The Cargo Fly is perfect for expeditions, whitewater performance, and river systems with multi-chamber permitting requirements.

Please note: The Cargo Fly zipper requires maintenance and care to function properly. In the event the zipper is damaged, it can be repaired in the field by following the proper procedures. Please refer to the Cargo Fly information sheet that you receive with your boat for additional information on care, maintenance, and repair.

Fjord Explorer Row Frame:

The Fjord Explorer Row Frame is a custom 1.5 lb oar-frame and 16 oz. oars.  Both can be disassembled for packing, and the oars can be reconfigured to form a feathered kayak paddle, or two short, canoe-style paddles.  An attachable skeg improves open-water tracking and a removable elevated seat improves rowing comfort and ergonomics.  The Fjord Explorer is easy to row and allows you to maintain speed efficiently, making it easy to cover distance.  Note – The oar-frame and oars are not intended for whitewater.
