Sheri Tingey and her son Thor made the first Alpacka Raft in the basement of their Chugiak, Alaska home in 2000. Their vision was simple–to build an ultralightweight, high-performance, low-maintenance, and bombproof packraft that could withstand the rigors of epic traverses through the Alaskan wilderness. Through constant experimentation and testing, we’ve made a lot of innovations to our packrafts over the years, but we’ve always stayed true to that original vision.
For 2017, we’ve overhauled our entire product line with the newest innovations and technologies available. Our time tested Alpacka Series now features an all new valve, handles for easy carrying, D-Rings for adding our custom foam backband, a revised Whitewater Deck that is drier and more durable than ever, and an all new Removable Whitewater Deck. The Whitewater Series has been updated with a completely revised 10-inch tube Alpackalypse and its big brother the all-new 12-inch tube Gnarwhal, both of which feature a new patent-pending hull design and our latest designs in 4-point thigh straps and seating systems, and the same new valve as the Alpacka Series. The Cargo Series now features a revised Gnu that is 8-inches longer than the prior version and now has a Touring Seat option for longer days on easier water; a completely revised Explorer 42 that features the same stern design as our Whitewater Series and an updated seating system for additional rigidity; and the all new Forager which our largest packraft ever and is perfect for sportsmen, families, and classic river trips. Finally, the 2017 Scout is as minimalist as ever with new fabrics that keep our high standards of durability and performance but bring the weight down well under 3lbs. All of our packrafts are handmade in our Mancos, Colorado facility by craftsmen and women using the finest raw materials, workmanship and design available anywhere.
